VYCII 2006 at UCLA began on the weekend of July 4th after the last promise of its farewell at UCI in 2003. The theme of this year “Bearer of Christ Love” evolved in 3 days of gathering with emphasis on “Behold”, “Believe” and “Behold” by sending the youth out to their world and to be witnesses of Christ. The youth at St Boniface prepared their fund raising activities to raise money for the convention, a big amount of work for their small finance. The big money kicker was raised, promised, and delivered by our parish priest Rev Michael Tung Nguyen who organized a substantial $20,000 amount to send the troops to the promised land of VYCII. The parish also put in $5,000 to make all the end meets. A good number, close to 100 youngsters of St Boniface were sent on their way, while the fund drive continued. There were individuals, such as philanthropies, and company sponsors that pushed the last effort of chipping in donations to send the young to the convention, both in and outside of the parish, among many communities and commerce like a global effect.
The opening ceremony started out on Saturday afternoon with powerful drum beats, performed by the drum team from the Bay area and really cracked open the souls of the convention. Its thunderous drum beats woke the youths up and rattled their souls with joyful cheers in the first night of over thousand in Pauley Pavilion indoor stadium. Rev Michael Tung Nguyen declared the opening of the convention, “Believe” followed by the welcoming speech by Nguyen Manh Chi, head of VYCII organizer, and remarks of Msr Pham Xuan Thang, Federation of Catholics America, and of Rev Mai Khai Hoan, Director of Orange County Catholics, and keynote speech by Rev Dong Minh Quang. Dr Tran Viet Cuong and his co-MC bridged the introduction in-between transition. The first night began the rally and praise with fun and powerful warm-up dances and worship songs. The youth band was awesome with their talents to move the crowd and lift the souls and spirit of the young and those full of prayful heart to where they ought to be. The balls of friendship and icebreaker were shot from the stage flying everywhere. People jumped up-n-down, danced on their feet, waved their hands, ran in trains, and sung their lungs out! Priests and nuns included. Tri-fusion ended in adoration of the holy Eucharist leaving many tired souls by the end of the night. The second day began with the Mass “Believe”. The attendance was above the 2,000 as of the last count. The dancers with colorful pageantry were spectacular in their spiritual moves in their offertory dances. Our Blessed Mother of LaVang was adored in utmost reverence. The learning day was filled with workshops throughout. There are well known speakers with topics from spiritual, to current events relevant to living our life in the Catholic faith, a vast teaching coverage for any listener of any age groups. Over twenty of valuable speaking arrangements from the church and Vietnamese community were invited to VYCII convention to enrich and challenge the Faith and Reason of the young Catholics. The night was unlike any other night with musical entertainment, and a show that was well enlightened and joyful for the ages. The night was seasoned opening into the Devine Mercy Night, led by the wonderful musical prayer. The sacrament of reconciliation was available to many at the moment, most came forth. The giant cross of Mercy caressed the stadium seats trailing its red and white divine tails of sacred Trust in Christ. Rev Bich Vu of CD Anaheim, St Boniface, guided the mystery of the Devine Mercy, a pray to merciful and forgiving God, revealed by Jesus Christ to Sr Faustina Kowalska, 1931. The night was quiet as it ended at midnight in contemplation. The last day was again filled with workshops, and concluded with the Mass of Sending Forth Liturgy presided by Bishop Edward Clark, Aux Bishop of LA, among the speakers cracking “Decoding The Vinci Code” in the convention. Deacon Hung of Anaheim was among the celebrants to assist Bishop Clark in the mass. In a rare moment of time, Rev Michael Tung Nguyen, Rev Bich Vu and Deacon Hung were all from CD Anaheim as celebrants in the mass, the rare photo op was captured in the Anaheim group shot. The convention was concluded with the Sending Forth Ritual, “Behold” guided by Sr Thuy Trang of DMTG. Joy with cheers to heaven! The VYCII three day experiences was awesome in spiritual and learning. The fellowship, friendship and team cheering, bonding were unforgettable. The dorm experience was a five star treat coming with super breakfast at Covel Commons. Many lost their sleep, and their voices, and were left with aching bodies by the end of the three day convention. Too much fun for the attendants and too much work for the servants, especially the team in the red T-shirts. God bless them! The promise of VYCIII were launched! Somewhere to be known.
